Lorde, the famous singer from New Zealand, has shared something very personal with her fans. In a recent interview with BBC Radio 1, she said she felt “trapped” before she started exploring her gender identity.
Lorde, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O’Connor, is known for her songs like “Royals” and “Solar Power.” She recently told Rolling Stone magazine that she feels “in the middle gender-wise.” She explained that she feels like a woman, except on the days when she feels like a man.
In the new radio interview with rollingstone, she said, “I felt so trapped in this straight-ahead femininity.” This means she felt stuck acting like a woman in a way that didn’t feel right all the time.
She gave an example from a photo shoot. Lorde said that sometimes she doesn’t want to wear just women’s clothes because it makes her feel uncomfortable. She also said her make-up should be treated more like male grooming, meaning it should be simple and not overdone. Otherwise, she feels like she can’t be herself.
At the 2025 Met Gala, Lorde wore a special item called a cummerbund, which is usually worn by men. She said this was a small way of showing how her gender expression is changing.
Lorde said she doesn’t have all the answers yet, but she feels free to explore who she really is. She told fans, “I feel a lot more expansive, a lot bigger, and my idea of beauty is different now.” She’s happy to keep learning about herself and seeing where her journey goes.
