ZZ Top’s longtime drummer, Frank Beard, is taking a temporary break from the band’s tour to undergo a health procedure, the group announced on March 14. While Beard focuses on his recovery, he will be replaced by John Douglas, a fellow Texan and longtime band technician who previously stepped in when Beard had an emergency appendectomy in 2002.
The band assured fans that Beard is looking forward to a “speedy recovery.” Having been with ZZ Top for over 55 years, Beard has played a crucial role in the band’s success, contributing to classic hits like Legs, Sharp Dressed Man, and Gimme All Your Lovin’.
ZZ Top’s most recent release was the 2022 live album Raw, recorded for their Netflix documentary That Little Ol’ Band From Texas. The album was a tribute to late bassist Dusty Hill, who passed away in 2021.
Despite Beard’s temporary absence, ZZ Top continues their tour, keeping their legacy of blues-rock alive for fans worldwide.
